Artificial Grass Recycling in Australia, the Honest Reality

Most artificial grass in Australia ends up in landfill. Recycling capacity is small and aimed at sports fields, and lifespan is the part you control.

The short version

If you lay a synthetic lawn in an Australian backyard today, the most likely destination for it in ten or fifteen years is landfill. Recycling capacity for synthetic turf exists in this country, but it is small, it is set up for sports fields rather than backyards, and nothing about the current system makes kerbside recycling of an old lawn realistic.

We sell artificial turf, so we have an obvious reason to skip past this part. We would rather you knew it up front, because the two things that most reduce the end-of-life burden are decided before you buy: how long the lawn lasts, and how much material you put down in the first place.

Why synthetic turf is hard to recycle

A roll of artificial grass looks like one material and behaves like four. The blades are usually polyethylene, sometimes with polypropylene thatch fibres mixed through the pile. The primary backing that holds those fibres is typically woven polypropylene. Then a secondary coat of latex or polyurethane is spread across the back to lock the tufts in place, which is what stops the blades pulling out when a dog sprints across the lawn.

Those layers are bonded, not clipped together. Standard plastics recycling depends on a clean, single-polymer feedstock, and a turf offcut is a laminate of at least two polymers held together by a third material that is neither of them. A yellow-lid council bin cannot deal with that, which is why turf offcuts belong in general waste.

Then there is what comes up with the lawn. A residential install is ballasted with silica sand brushed down into the pile, commonly around 5kg per square metre, and by the time the turf is lifted that sand is bound up with soil, dust, hair, moss and whatever else a decade of weather deposits. Separating contaminated sand back out of a used carpet is the expensive part of the process, and it is the reason recycling turf takes purpose-built machinery rather than an ordinary plastics line.

What recycling capacity exists here

Australia's first purpose-built synthetic turf recycling facility opened in regional Victoria in 2024 with state circular economy funding. It separates end-of-life turf back into sand, rubber and polyethylene, recovering the large majority of the material for reuse in things like soft-fall underlay and construction products.

That is a genuine step forward, and it is also one plant. Its stated capacity is about 7,500 tonnes a year, while the volume of synthetic surface replaced across the country each year is considerably larger. The clients and projects it lists publicly are institutional ones: sports fields, clubs, schools, councils and community facilities. A homeowner in Perth or Cairns with 90 m² of tired turf is a long way outside that catchment.

Some suppliers and installers run take-back arrangements tied to a replacement job. Ask where the material physically goes and who processes it, because "we handle disposal" often means a skip bin.

The defensible assumption for a residential lawn bought in 2026 is landfill at the end, with a reasonable chance that changes for the better before you get there.

What removal costs when the day comes

Disposal is priced by weight and volume, and turf is bulky. The carpet itself runs a couple of kilograms per square metre, and at around 5kg per square metre the sand comes up with it, so a 100 m² lawn generally means roughly half to three-quarters of a tonne heading out the driveway.

State landfill levies vary widely by where you live, from about $90 a tonne in Western Australia and in regional areas up to about $175 a tonne in metropolitan Melbourne and Sydney, with Queensland sitting between the two and climbing on a legislated schedule. Levies are only part of a gate fee, so metropolitan tip charges for general waste land well above the levy itself.

That is not a reason to avoid synthetic turf, just a cost to factor into the total the way you would with a deck or a pergola.

How long the lawn lasts matters more than recycling

Because recycling is limited, how often you replace the lawn decides most of its end-of-life impact. That is a specification question more than a maintenance one.

A thin, low-density budget turf laid in full northern sun and walked on daily will flatten, fade and split at the seams sooner than a heavier product on a stronger backing. When it does, the whole lawn comes up and the whole lawn goes to the tip. Buying twice in fifteen years doubles both your cost and your landfill contribution, which is the strongest environmental argument we can make for spending a bit more per square metre than the cheapest roll allows.

Maintenance pushes the same date out. Brushing the pile so it does not mat down, keeping the surface clear of organic debris that turns into soil, and dealing with pet mess promptly all add years to a lawn, and our maintenance guide covers the routine.

Practical things you can do

  • Measure carefully and order to suit the roll width so you cut less waste. Our installation guide covers planning cuts around a roll rather than hacking pieces out of the middle.
  • Keep clean offcuts. Large scraps suit dog runs, shed floors, ute trays and pot bases, and second-hand turf finds buyers on marketplace listings more often than you would think.
  • Bag your trimmings rather than sweeping loose fibre into the gutter, since that fibre ends up in stormwater. The wider pollution picture is in our environmental guide.
  • Choose sand infill over loose rubber crumb for a residential lawn. Sand is easier to separate later and avoids the microplastic issues associated with crumb.
  • Reuse the base. A well-built crushed rock base with good falls rarely needs replacing when the carpet does, so a second lawn on an existing base generates far less waste.
  • Ask about recycling at replacement time before you book a skip. Capacity is growing, and the answer in 2036 may well be better than the answer today.
